Vietnam to the UAE: The Journey of a Premium Coffee Bean

Every cup of a Ca Phin coffee begins long before it reaches your table in Dubai. It begins on a mountainside in Vietnam's Central Highlands, in the hands of a farmer who has spent a lifetime figuring out what a coffee cherry requires to become the best. By the time the bean is ground, flowered, and dripped through a phin filter in your kitchen, it has traveled across an ocean, a culture, and a great deal of care. Here's what that path looks like.

Vietnam's Central Highlands, including provinces like Dak Lak and Lam Dong, have the elevation, volcanic soil, and tropical climate that coffee plantations grow in. This region has cultivated Robusta for generations, and in recent years, a new crop of farmers has pushed quality even higher, planting Fine Robusta and Single Origin Arabica beans that go against the old idea of Vietnamese coffee as cheap and bitter.

At Ca Phin, our story begins on the farm, not in a boardroom. We didn't want to be another company that sourced anonymous beans from a broker. So we traveled to Vietnam, walked the farms, and met with the producers who tend these hillsides.

We buy directly from farmers we know, avoiding the layers of middlemen that typically separate a grower from the person enjoying their coffee thousands of kilometres away.

This relationship impacts everything. When you speak with a farmer face to face, you gain a better understanding of their processing processes, harvest timing, and the shear amount of talent required to hand-pick and grade cherries to specialty standards. It also means that the people who grow the coffee are treated fairly, and that quality and workmanship are appreciated rather than forced out.

Not all cherries make the cut. Ca Phin beans are stored to specialty-grade standards from the moment they are picked, sorted for ripeness, defects removed, and graded significantly higher than commercial Robusta. This is the distinction between coffee and speciality coffee: a level of attention that begins in the field and continues throughout the drying, grinding, and exporting processes.

This is the point where the journey becomes more local. Rather of roasting in Vietnam and sending roasted bags around the world, where the flavor may fade before the bag is even opened, we roast our sourced beans directly here in Dubai, in collaboration with a local roasting partner. Roasting close to the point of sale ensures that each batch is roasted with intention, created especially to the character of each bean, and arrives significantly fresher than coffee that has been roasted and kept in transit for weeks.

Every cup of Ca Phin coffee reflects a remarkable trip, beginning with fertile coffee farms in Vietnam and ending with freshly roasted beans in the UAE. It is a journey founded on quality, sustainability, authenticity, and a strong respect for Vietnamese coffee culture.
